I was thinking about my previous blog about Emily beginning to live over her 12th birthday. I didn’t say all that I wanted to share. As Emily watches the breakfast scene unfold, seeing herself reliving that day, she finds it too painful to continue watching. She asks the stage manager if anyone ever realizes how quickly life goes and how unaware of that fact people are. He replies that the saints and poets do maybe. She then prepares herself to say goodbye to all of the things that we as humans take for granted! She tells the world goodbye, specifically to things such as ticking clocks, sunflowers, food, coffee, new-ironed dresses, hot baths, sleeping and waking up! She carries the burden of the play’s message that Wilder was trying to get across. To me, this is what Mrs. Cannon meant by saying that literature is life! It touches the heart more deeply than just telling people that life is short. It awakens the reader to the reality of the human experience that unites us all! I am in awe of Thornton Wilder!
